Controlling Invasive Species in the
Water and on the Land
Invasive
plant species crowd out native plants and have little food or
habitat value to native animal species. Click
here for information on
what qualifies a plant to be listed as invasive. The USDA
Natural Resources
Conservation Service offers educational programs about invasive
species and periodically offers a
Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP) grant to landowners that
need financial assistance with habitat improvements of their land,
including invasive plant control.
It is
important for all boaters to practice good boat sanitation procedures
whether paddling in a canoe or kayak, or using a powerboat. This will
help reduce the spread of non-native aquatic invasive species. Page 12
of the
2008 Connecticut Angler’s
Guide reviews the
proper procedures that should be followed. The Connecticut Agricultural
Experiment Station has an
Invasive Aquatic Plant
Program that
includes workshops and possible lake surveys. Available for download is

Invasive Aquatic Plants in Connecticut.
